Amber Burton Small is the Director of Business Development and Marketing for HARDEN JACKSON, LLC. In her career as a certified paralegal, Amber has assisted attorneys in family law practices since 1997. At HARDEN JACKSON, Amber manages marketing, branding, advertising, business development and public relations for the firm. She also coordinates consultations with prospective new clients, assisting them with selecting the appropriate attorney for their cases.
From 2004-2007, Amber served as Public Relations and Program Director for Heart of Sailing, an international charity headquartered in Bloomington, Indiana which provides recreational therapy for participants with developmental disabilities. At Heart of Sailing, Amber helped develop the mission, services, programming and fundraising activities. She traveled extensively both in the US and abroad introducing sailing as a form of recreational therapy. Through her research and work with the participants, she developed the “Benefits of Sailing Therapy” (2007) which identifies the cognitive and physical therapeutic benefits of sailing. She continues to serve as Volunteer Chapter Director for the Bloomington Regional Program.
Amber has presented at various conferences on developmental disabilities including the Autism One National Conference in Chicago. Amber’s work with Heart of Sailing has been published in periodicals, including The Autism File and American Sailing Association, and she previously hosted a monthly Web cast regarding recreational therapy. She has been a guest on Indianapolis local radio and national internet webcasts discussing family law, collaborative law, adoption and human trafficking.
A 1994 graduate of Indiana University, Amber received her Bachelor’s Degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences. She later earned her paralegal certification from IPFW (1997). Amber is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Public Management.
Amber is committed to organizations which provide assistance to women and children and is an active volunteer. Currently, she volunteers for Christ is My Big C, a nonprofit created by Stephenie Jocham, her boss, mentor and friend who lost her battle with cancer in June 2011. The charity raises funds to assist cancer patients with daily living needs and expenses.
Amber has previously volunteered with The Fatherless Foundation, a local charity which provides orphanage relief and support and funds grants to adopting families. She has traveled with The Fatherless Foundation on services trips to orphanages in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Haiti (following the earthquake in January 2010). Amber has previously served as site coordinator for the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Ask a Lawyer Program and was recognized by the IBA in its 2008 Hall of Fame for her volunteerism to its service programs.
Amber is conversationally fluent in French. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, attending concerts, playing drums, and sailing. Amber is a member of the Indiana Paralegal Association, the Indianapolis Bar Association and the Indiana University Alumni Association.
